The Main tournament (24 players, matches to 5) saw no upsets in the 1st round. Aurélie STERCKX won 2 matches to lose to Alain CHIF in the 1/4 finals. Nardy Pillards did the same but then Sassan KASHANIAN proved too strong. Paul VAN DIJKE had an easy run till Zsolt Tasnadi stopped him. And the clash in the 2nd round between Michel LAMOTE and Luc PALMANS was won by the latter who proved also too strong for his clubmate Walter MEUWIS. In the 1/2 finals, Alain Chif won from Sassan Kashanian and Luc Palmans beat Zsolt Tasnadi. At the end, we had a new winner of a Brussels Friendly tournament, Luc Palmans emerged. Congratulations !

In the Consolation tournament (matches to 3) Michaël Lewicki had a fantastic run by beating Michel Rolin, Alex Schrager, Aurélie Sterckx, Jean-Louis Marchand & Zsolt Tasnadi to reach the final. Sabrina Vastapane upset Johan Segers and Marc VAN HAVERBEKE but fell against Paul Van Dijke who also won against Walter Meuwis but lost from Sassan Kashanian who took the 3rd place.

In the Last Chance tournament (matches to 1), Simon GARZANITI lost rather quickly, François GUEYDON beat Dirk Laureyssens to lose from Martin COLLET and Manuel BAPTISTA won from Susan van der Heijden & Jean Lewicki. Sabrina Vastapane – for her first participation – reached the final which still has to be played against Marc Van Haverbeke.

The tournament was embellished by a special action : 10 mini-bottles of champagne to be won by those players who would throw 6-6 from the bar against a 1-point board (the 6-point of course). How often does that happen ? Around 20.01 hours, Jean Lewicki started his first round against Susan van der Heijden like this : he opened 6-2 playing 24/18 – 13/11, then Susan threw 6-1 (13/7 – 8/7) hitting a blot. And Jean…. yes, you guess it, 6-6. Champagne ! The bottles we’re gone around 22.30 hours mostly won by our friends from the Netherlands. Now we know why they came for the first time… Of course, next anniversary, around beginning 2013, 20 mini-bottles will be at stake.

Brussels Friendly will continue every first Friday evening of the month. See you with pleasure, next meeting on the 3rd of February for edition 11 !

May I invite you to a special happening for the 1st anniversary of the Brussels Friendly backgammon tournament (main, consolation & last chance), n°10, on Friday the 13th of January (see all info in included flyers in English, French, Dutch).

At that occasion, the participation will be 5,- € as usual but with price money doubled and free invitation for all the players who have played at least once in Brussels Friendly 1 to 9. (Ex. if 24 players, 1st prize = 72,- € (winner of the main) ; 2nd prize = 60,- € (runner-up in the main) ; 3rd prize = 48,- € (winner of the consolation) ; 4th prize = 36,- € (runner-up of the consolation) ; 5th prize = 24,- € (winner of the last chance).

Also some special prizes for the less fortunate : 10 mini-bottles of champagne for the first 10 players to throw 6-6 from the bar against a 1-point board (the 6-point – of course) ! If you’re very, very unlucky, you can win them all !
